What is SLICES?
SLICES stands for Scientific Large Scale Infrastructure for Computing/Communication Experimental Studies. In essence, it’s a flexible Europe-wide consortium of platforms designed to support large-scale, experimental research on:
- cloud and edge-based computing architectures and services
- networking protocols
- radio technologies
- services
- data collection
- parallel and distributed computing
Currently, the SLICES-RI consortium gathers partners from 16 European countries, all of them having committed to contribute resources and has received the endorsements of key stakeholders and the political supports of 12 European Governments. Several of the current partners are operating facilities that are already on their national and regional RI roadmaps.
The University of Oulu serves as Finland’s national SLICES-FI node, coordinating activities within Finland, and aligning operations with other infrastructures in SLICES Research Infrastructure (SLICES-RI).
SLICES-FI federated infrastructures
Finland’s 6G Roadmap is the basis for a long-term plan that aims to establish research infrastructures in Finland as a foundation for excellent research and to internationally position Finland in a coordinated manner in 5G, beyond 5G and 6G research.
The Finnish principal organisation of the national 6G Roadmap is University of Oulu, with the participating infrastructure 5G Test Network, or 5GTN for short.
The Test Network is federated with SLICES-RI. Part of 5GTN assets are available through federation portal for remote use.
